There’s nothing quite like a plan coming together.
And here, in the US, that’s a feeling investors in certain parts of the energy sector could be experiencing sooner than later.
The signs are all around us and becoming more obvious each day.
It goes back to an agreement signed in 1993, called Megatons to Megawatts, where Russia converted 500 metric tons of weapons-grade uranium into 15,000 metric tons of low enriched uranium that the US then used for its nuclear power plants.
What followed was Russia dominating the nuclear power space for the next three decades, as American companies couldn’t compete on price. The US just purchased all of its nuclear fuel from Moscow, and it wasn’t a problem until it was.
Now, in 2026, the US is scrambling to establish its own domestic nuclear fuel industry and de-couple from Russia due to the war in Ukraine. In the name of energy security, establishing that domestic supply chain has become a national priority.
Some uranium is mined here in the US, but not nearly enough to meet the country’s demands and getting to that point is going to take time. But as the cliché goes, where there’s a will, there’s a way.
That’s why, in just the last few years, you’ve heard a lot about governments putting money and manpower behind getting nuclear power plants running again. It coincides with an energy crisis being made worse by the slow phasing out of fossil fuels and the realization that renewables like wind and solar can’t replace all of that energy demand on their own.
And out of that drastic need, opportunity is growing.
Governments are moving fast on this to not only have more stable, more reliable energy grids for citizens, but for defense too.
A recent story highlighted how, through its Janus Program, the US Army has selected energy vendors and initial locations to build and deploy nuclear microreactors. These reactors will be deployed on Army bases, providing them with the continuity they need to use the increasingly complex technological systems the Army’s mission requires. The companies involved in building and operating these reactors are being rewarded up to $2.2 billion.
That’s only the start of it.
While companies offering their services to governments will certainly see the profits coming in, it might only be a drop in the bucket compared to the potential hidden in the commercial side of the nuclear power resurgence.
For the past few years, you couldn’t look at anything related to investing without hearing about AI. That fact is affecting energy as well, especially when it comes to newfound popularity in nuclear power.
Because the AI data centers that the big tech companies are building need power, a lot of it. So much that the country’s grid as it is currently can’t handle the load. Big tech sees that and is throwing massive amounts of money to get in on nuclear power so they aren’t being left behind.
Microsoft, for example, has partnered with Constellation Energy to secure a $1 billion loan to restart Unit 1 at the infamous Three Mile Island nuclear plant. The deal is set to provide Microsoft with power it needs for a data center well into the 2050s.
Similarly, Amazon is committing at least $1 billion to similar projects, with a specific aim of developing next-generation reactors that have a smaller footprint and can be deployed in a broader range of areas than traditional reactors.
That doesn’t include similar moves from Meta, Google, and other tech giants all vying for the number one spot in the AI race. And one thing you can count on is that the money these companies have committed so far is just the buy-in. As demand grows, so too will the amounts these giants spend.
Everyone wants uranium, which means they will need to spend big on the few companies that can provide it.
So everything is converging into a perfect storm of profit for uranium companies and anyone who invests in them.
